About 211 SD
Planning to make 211 statewide in South Dakota began in 2004. A planning workgroup was formed
with representatives from United Ways, government entities and non-profit organizations.
The workgroup concluded that a statewide 211 system would benefit the residents of South Dakota
tremendously and they enthusiastically endorsed working together to accomplish this task.
The workgroup decided that the most
economical and efficient model would be have one centralized call center that
would answer all the 211 calls in the state and would use a statewide resource
directory to connect callers with resources in their local areas. The HELP!Line
Center was designated as the centralized call center for 211.
Progress in implemntation of 211
SD:
The 211 phone number was activated
in the Sioux Falls metropolitan area in October, 2001 by the HELP!Line
Center. The call volume increased by over 50% in the first year as word
spread about the services provided by dialing 211. Over 35,000 phone calls were
answered in 2005. 211 in Sioux Falls is supported by the Sioux Empire United
Way, the City of Sioux Falls, Minnehaha County, Lincoln County and through grants
and donations.
A statewide on-line resource database was unveiled in March, 2005. The database contains over
6,000 social service, government, non-profit and faith-based programs and agencies across South
Dakota. The database has allowed resource information to become easily accessible 24/7 to any South
Dakotan with a web connection. Click here to access the database.
The 211 phone number was activated
in the Rapid City area in June of 2006 due to the dedication of the Community
Services Connection. The Community Services Connection spearheaded the effort
to bring 211 to Rapid City by identifying and securing funding sources and spreading
the word about 211. There are several funding partners that made 211 in Rapid
City possible, including the United
Way of the Black Hills and the City of Rapid City. The 211 service extends
to Black Hawk, Box Elder, Ellsworth AFB, Hermosa, Hill City, Keystone, Newell,
Piedmont, and Summerset.
The 211 phone number expanded it's
service to Sturgis and Whitewood August 1st, 2006. The number was activated
just in time to serve the 500,000 people that attend the Sturgis Rally.
Fundraising for 211 in Sturgis is provided by the United
Way of the Black Hills and ABC of Sturgis.
The 211 phone number expanded it's
service to the Northern Hills area in November of 2006. Fundraising
for 211 in the Northern Hills is provided by the United
Way of the Black Hills. The 211 service extends to Belle Fourche,
Deadwood, Lead, and Spearfish.
